Taste of the Wild

TASTE OF THE WILD - A Celebration of Animals and an Evening of Food, Wine & Fun!

Held annually, "Taste of the Wild" is the sanctuary's largest fundraising event of the year. 2020 Date and theme coming soon. Come have fun and enjoy the food, drink, entertainment, and of course, animals! Our theme this year will be 'The Wild West!' This is an event you won't want to miss!

Along with fun theme ideas, we come up with, you'll also see: restaurants, wineries and breweries from all over Arizona offering tastings from their menus; music and different types of entertainment; a silent auction and raffle with amazing destination and entertainment packages; and behind-the-scenes visits and special presentations with some of your favorite animals!

As we're a 501(c)(3) organization that receives no city, state, or federal funding, the proceeds from this fundraiser directly support the animals and education programs at Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary; providing food, triage supplies, and housing needs not only to the animals we have on grounds but also the hundreds more we'll see come through our gates in need of our help.

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped with the 2019 event. It was a great success! We raised a lot of money for the animals and everyone had a great time. We're looking forward to even greater success in 2020, but we can't do it without you! Purchase your tickets today to ensure the continued care of these amazing animals.

  • Highly trained educators will lead your group on an age-appropriate tour or another program that will be fun and interactive.
  • Students will learn many things about the animals here at the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary.
  • Programs will be educational and fun.
  • Programs run from 1 - 2 hours, depending on the age group and theme.
  • Programs are aligned with the Arizona Academic Standards set by the Arizona Department of Education.

WHAT NOT TO EXPECT:

  • School groups going beyond fences that are used as barriers.

Educators will be outside of the gift shop waiting for your group. Please have your group leader make contact with our educators before having your group leave their vehicles.

Please have students wear name tags during their visit to the sanctuary. Have groups divide into appropriate sizes as discussed at the time of booking.

Groups renting the pavilion for lunch may leave their lunches there while the group is participating in their program. However, this area cannot be locked and will be accessible to other patrons. We encourage every student to bring water and to carry it with them during their program.

We encourage every student to wear a hat and sunscreen while at the sanctuary. Please check the weather the day before to advise students to dress appropriately.

We require clients to provide one adult for every ten students in attendance. Chaperones are to be engaged in the program, acting as disciplinarians, if necessary.

There is no smoking on sanctuary property and we prohibit music devices, balloons, straws, in-line skates, roller skates, skateboards, scooters, bikes, and pets in the facility.

The pavilion needs to be kept clean and left how it was found. Garbage containers are provided.

Outreach programs are fun, interactive programs that bring the sanctuary to you. They are conducted indoors unless otherwise discussed. We will arrive 15 - 20 minutes prior to the time scheduled. Please have the area prepared for the program before arrival. We request that the location has a table set up in front of the audience seating. If you cannot provide a table please let us know ahead of time. Also, let us know if there are any cultural restrictions on the topics or animals we may bring.

Education Animals

The following animals are available for on-site and outreach programs. HPZS does not guarantee specific animal requests for programs, but we will work to accommodate any request you may have. Each program is theme-specific and will include appropriate animals. The health and safety of our animals is a priority when we plan a program and can, therefore, affect our decisions.

Please be aware that not all program animals are touchable and that touching of the animals during a program is at the discretion of the presenter.

We reserve the right to change our lesson plan and the animals used for the lesson at any time, without prior notification, to ensure the safety of our staff, animals, and program guests.

Docent Program

WHAT EXACTLY IS A DOCENT? The dictionary's definition is "tutor".  Docents are akin to educators and the Docents here at the sanctuary fulfill the vital role of conveying information about the sanctuary's residents: assisting with special events, leading outreachs in the community, and always leaving a memorable impression of the facility. Docents are ambassadors for all the rescued animals at Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A DOCENT? Attend a six week (once per week) workshop that covers the Sanctuary animals, teaches how to give tours to different age groups, outreach training, and animal handling. You will receive a handbook, t-shirt and name tag (a small fee covers these materials).  Docents are also required to attend informal quarterly meetings and additional training classes.

To join this incredible group, CLICK HERE to complete a volunteer application.
