Docents at the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary are key members of the education department. Some pickup programs just as needed while others work on a regular basis, providing information and interactive opportunities for our visitors. Docents conduct professional tours, assist during special events like Zoo by Moonlight, contribute to outreaches, and help give an exciting and memorable experience to kids and adults visiting HPZS. Level I Docents complete a four-day training workshop that covers sanctuary animals, interaction with visitors as a knowledgeable guide, and leading age appropriate tours. |

Docents have the opportunity to grow in the department. After 50 hours of service as a Level I Docent, individuals can begin their training as a Level II Basic Animal Handler. These docents are trained to handle reptiles like small snakes, lizards, and turtles/tortoises. After 50 hours of service as a Level II Basic Animal Handler, docents can begin their training as an Advanced Animal Handler. This training teaches handling of large boa constrictors, lizards, and other reptiles. |

All docents are required to attend informational, quarterly meetings, as well as additional training sessions. Level II Docents are required to continually gain experience handling animals in order to maintain their Level II status. Docents receive a quarterly newsletter, free membership to the sanctuary, t-shirt, name tag, manual, and informational animal cards.
